The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automated tracking system for ship and ship traffic services (VTS). The system identifies and locates vessels by exchanging electronic data with other nearby vessels or AIS base stations. However, the information provided by the AIS system is only a supplement, and the maritime radar is still the main tool for avoiding collisions between water transport vessels.
